Congo Clothing Company

Background

The client, Congo Clothing Company, partners with the survivors of sexual violence in the DRC via sewing skills training (supported by a portion of profits). They wanted a new product that the survivors could manufacture themselves.

Goals

  • Create a distinctive, usable tote bag unlike typical designs.

  • Ensure manufacturing is accessible by the survivors in the DRC.

  1. Initial Survey

We surveyed 153 people and learned the biggest insights was the desire for an interior pocket and that tote style #4 was clearly the most liked.

2. In-Person Testing

Focus:

  • Size

  • Strap Length

  • Color/Texture

  • Reversibility

Feedback:

  • Big bags (to fit laptop)

  • Long straps,

  • Plain exterior design with a colorful interior design.

3. Final Survey

We polled 181 people to find preferred colors, styles, and patterns. The top choice was a black canvas bag with a colorful interior pattern.

Impact

The survivors in the DRC will manufacture this tote bag, creating income and skills development. A portion of profits continues to support the sewing program.
